Projects

Many companies have participated in the competition of obtaining technical support for developing environmentally sound energy projects in their installations.

In phase 1 of the energy efficiency component, pilot projects were selected among the companies that had participated in the Cleaner Production Programme of UNIDO / NCPC.
In phase 2 and in future phases the selection of companies is done based on open tenders. The Economic Chamber of Commerce and the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce – Industry Chamber supports CCEI with outreach to the industry.

Phase 3 call for companies closed in end February and the applications are now under evaluation.2011.

Below follows information about some of the projects CCEI has been providing technical support since 2009

Modernization of cooling towers in TPP REK Bitola

REK Bitola is the largest coal fired power plant in Macedonia. The owner of the plant is the state utility company ELEM . Installed capacity is 675 MW. Average annual electricity production is 4,34 TWh. The power plant has three blocks of 225 MW, each with boiler, turbine and cooling tower. This report analyse replacement of the present asbestos cement fill in the cooling towers by modern PVC or PP fill. The report concludes that this replacement will lower the cooling water temperature, and thereby improve the overall efficiency of the power plant from 30,93 % to 31,12 %. The investment is estimated to 10 mill EUR. The reduction of CO2 emissions will be about 25000 tons per year.

Bitola district heating with thermal energy from TPP Bitola

Bitola is the second largest city in Macedonia, with 86000 inhabitants. This report analyses feasibility of supply of heat from REK Bitola coal fired power plant to Bitola city and the villages Novaci and Moglia. The report concludes that the investment will be about 40 mill EUR and the internal rate of return about 11%. Heat supply from the power plant to Bitola, Novaci and Moglia will reduce the electricity output from the power plant by 0.18 MW per 1 MW heat supplied.

New greenhouses supplied with waste energy from REK Bitola

The aim of this report was to assess the potential for using low temperature waste heat from REK Bitola to heat new greenhouses in the vincinity of the power plant. It was concluded quickly that the temperature of the cooling water at REK Bitola is not sufficiently high cover the need on greenhouse businesses. However the study provide useful input to potential future development of district heating system in the region based on heat produced at REK Bitola. The potential heat demand from greenhouses in the area along a future district heating main pipeline between REK Bitola and Bitola is assessed to 35 MW.

Fuel switch to vine prunings in Kavadarci

The aim of the pilot project described in this pre-feasibility study is to replace fossil-fuel based heating with heating based on biomass waste from vine pruning in in a public school in Municipality of Kavadarci, and this way assess the potential of a wider use of waste biomass generated by the wine industry, for heating purposes. It is estimated that the volume of biomass generated in the pruning season in Kavadarci, which today is treated as waste, is suffient to cover the heating demand in all publich buildings in the municipality.

OHIS Skopje

AD OHIS is an industrial complex consisting of several chemical factories. OHIS Energetika supply these factories with process steam, electricity, natural gas and industrial, decarbonised and demineralised water. The report concludes that the efficiency of the boiler is between 63-73%, and the efficiency of the steam-condensate system is assessed at 50-55 %. The potential for energy savings is considerable. The feasibility of proposed energy saving measures depend on future development of the industrial complex AD OHIS.
